Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine insemination is an assisted reproductive technologies method that most closely simulates natural conception.
Like any other ART method, artificial insemination has certain indications for use, which include:

  • cervical factor infertility (in this case, the sperm cannot travel through the cervical canal because of poor consistency of the cervical mucus, thus making conception impossible);

  • vaginismus;

  • moderate impairment of male fertility, as well as erectile dysfunction and anejaculation;

  • a woman without a sexual partner.

We can highlight two possible ways of conducting this procedure:

  • intrauterine insemination with husband's sperm;

  • intrauterine insemination with donor sperm.

It is important to keep in mind that intrauterine insemination can be effective only given normal tubal patency.  If tubal patency is impaired, a doctor will most likely recommend that you use the in vitro fertilization method

As a general rule, if three or four intrauterine insemination procedures were unsuccessful, there is no point in continuing to attempt insemination using this method.  Whether or not you should do intrauterine insemination is decided by your doctor on the basis of the results of your medical examination, anamnesis, and your individual characteristics.

  • The advantages of the intrauterine insemination method

Unlike IVF, the use of IUI does not require hormonal stimulation prior to the procedure.  During the process of intrauterine insemination, husband's or donor sperm undergoes processing, which increases the chances of conception.   The procedure itself takes little time and is minimally invasive.  The cost of the intrauterine insemination procedure is significantly lower than the price of IVF.

  • What is the cost of intrauterine insemination?

The cost of intrauterine insemination is certainly lower than that of any other ART method.  Thus, if you do not have any serious fertility impairment, you may only need to have the IUI procedure: the moderate price of the intrauterine insemination procedure does not mean that the method is less effective.  But its use is inadvisable with more serious reproductive health disorders.
