Proteins increase the efficiency of IVF

At least, so say the scientists from the Institute of Reproductive Medicine, the State of Delaware (USA). «Protein is essential for good quality embryos and better egg quality, it turns out,» - study researcher Dr. Jeffrey Russell, director of the Delaware Institute for Reproductive Medicine, said in a statement. His research was released at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' annual clinical meeting in New Orleans.

The Researchers asked 120 women undergoing IVF to keep a three-day nutritional journal before they had an embryo transfer. Those patients whose daily ration consisted of protein for more than 25%, and whose daily carbohydrate intake was less than 40%, had the pregnancy rate four times higher than those who took primarily carbohydrates. There were no differences in body mass index (a measure of weight relative to height) between the two groups.

Does allergy to semen can prevent the birth of children?

When some time after the marriage, Dominic and Anna Robbins still didn’t have a long awaited child, they decided that the problem was in Anna, because she suffered from polycystic ovaries and had a number of gynecological diseases. When, after long-term treatment pregnancy hadn’t occurred, Dominic was additionally tested and the doctors found that the man suffered from a rather unusual pathology – he had an allergy to his own sperm.

Immunological factor of male infertility is one of the least studied in modern medicine, but fairly common - about 10% of men produce antibodies to their own sperm.

In the case of Dominic, the matter was in groin injury received in childhood. The thing is that such injuries often result in a rupture of capillaries and tubules.

The lack of sleep - another cause of male infertility?

Danish researchers seem to have identified another possible cause of male infertility. For 20 years experts from the University of Southern Denmark have been studying about 1,000 men, who were undergoing special tests of their seminal fluid and were filling out a questionnaire concerning the quality of sleep. It was found out that disturbances in sleep mode, can entail a reduction in male fertility in addition to other health problems.

It turned out that the number of sperm cells of those who wake up in the night and / or have trouble falling asleep, is 25% lower than of those who do not have problems with sleep.

Israelis don’t have to adopt their own children any more

From now on, citizens of Israel, whose children were born with the help of foreign surrogate mothers, don’t have to go through a long and tedious procedure of adoption of their own children. On the 12th of May the Governmental Legal Adviser Yehuda Weinstein, sent an appropriate conclusion to the High Court of Justice. Now citizens of Israel who are forced to resort to the help of surrogate mothers will be recorded parents of the child, avoiding the adoption process.

This move of the government is designed to simplify the procedure of surrogacy for the Israelites, for one reason or another using the service abroad. I’d like to remind you that before such pairs had to pass a compulsory DNA test to confirm their paternity.

A new technology of oocyte storage

It seems that a group of scientists from the Israeli Core Dynamic Center managed to create a new way of preserving eggs.

During a standard cryopreservation procedure, eggs are being frozen in liquid nitrogen at about -200 degrees centigrade below zero. The disadvantage of this method is that eggs contain a large amount of water which freezes into ice, crystals of which may damage the cell membrane. To avoid it, the method of vitrification is used when freezing eggs - a super-fast way to cool the oocytes, where the water goes directly into a jelly-like state. The Israeli scientists have gone even further by adding to the standard procedure of oocytes freezing and the subsequent vitrification another stage - they turned the eggs into a powder.
